Mezzo soprano Lucy Joy Altus is a native New Yorker and recent graduate of the Juilliard School where she received her Master’s degree. As an undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon, Altus performed Handel’s Messiah, Sesto in Sartorio’s Giulio Cesare, Ramiro in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, as well as Un pâtre, La Chatte, and L’écureuil in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges. In 2022, Altus was a District Winner as well as a Regional Encouragement Award Winner for the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. In 2023, she was an Encouragement Award Winner for the New York District. Most recently, she won second place in Opera Mississippi’s John Alexander National Vocal Competition, was a semi-finalist in Houston Grand Opera’s 36th Annual Concert of Arias, was a finalist in the Marcella Sembrich International Voice Competition, and an Encouragement Award Winner in the Opera Index Vocal Competition. In the 2022-23 Juilliard Opera season, Altus performed La Maestra delle Novizie in Puccini's Suor Angelica. In the 2023-24 season, she participated in a masterclass with renowned mezzo soprano, Susan Graham, played Estelle in John Musto’s Later the Same Evening and played Annio in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. In both 2023 and 2024, Altus was a young artist at the Merola Opera Program.
